What is Chiropractic Neurology?
Chiropractic Neurology is a specialty of the Chiropractic profession. Individuals carrying this title have obtained a minimum of 300 hours of post-doctorate education and training. It is only after the doctor passes in-depth written and practical examinations administered by the American Chiropractic Neurology Board that the doctor is recognized as a Chiropractic Neurologist. The specialty is recognized by the American Chiropractic Association and the certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and accredited by The International Accreditation Services (IAS). There are less than 700 board certified chiropractic neurologists worldwide.
Chiropractic Neurology is defined as the field of functional neurology that engages the internal and external environment of the individual in a structured and targeted approach to affect positive changes in the central nervous system, including brain, brainstem, cerebellum, spinal cord and peripheral nerve function. Therapeutic protocols are based on mainstream and current scientific research on brain and central nervous system integration. The doctors will direct appropriate clinical applications that optimize development or rehabilitation of central nervous system function. Chiropractic Neurologists utilize the most current rehabilitation methods and equipment such as upper body ergometers, physical exercise rehabilitation, neuromuscular re-education, and auditory or visual programs to evoke specific neuron activation for nerve transmission to the spinal cord tracts and exiting nerves affecting human function.
What type of testing is performed and what type of equipment is used?
Chiropractic neurology utilizes evaluations that are purely scientific investigations into human physiology and include examination of cranial nerve functions, reflex testing, motor/muscle strength testing, sensory testing, balance and coordination, optokinetic tests, ocular pursuits and saccades, right and left brain based integration and function, cortical blind spot evaluation, radiography (x-rays), posture and gait analysis, cerebellar testing. MRI imaging and electrodiagnostic testing are ordered when indicated by examination findings.
A variety of testing systems are utilized to identify loss of function and to validate changes and progress during the course of treatment. One such test is blind-spot mapping or cortical mapping which is a diagrammatical measurement of size and shape of the natural physiological blind spot in each eye or visual system. The blind spots are not perceived in normal vision as the cerebral cortex processes visual images so that the blind spot is not consciously seen. Careful evaluation of the difference in the size and shapes from both eyes will show many aspects of brain function or dysfunction including any imbalance of right and left brain activity. Optokinetic pursuits and saccades are continually evaluated for insight into integration of parietal and frontal lobes of the brain.
